13 Goals in 2012

Money Saving Mom has inspired me to set specific goals to conquer. I'm planning on 1 post per goal, mapping out how to meet each one with babysteps.

Here are my goals, in no particular order:
  1. Read the entire bible in 1 year. Going to use Mom's Toolbox, Operation Read the Bible, and You Version bible app reading plans to help me accomplish this.
  2. Complete a C25K plan
  3. Read 4 new 30 day devotional books. (not counting the Journey magazine I get from church)
  4. Pray daily.

The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven by Kevin & Alex Malarkey

In 2004, Kevin Malarkey and his six-year-old son, Alex, suffered an horrific car accident. The impact from the crash paralyzed Alex—and medically speaking, it was unlikely that he could survive. “I think Alex has gone to be with Jesus,” a friend told the stricken dad. But two months later, Alex awoke from a coma with an incredible story to share. Of events at the accident scene and in the hospital while he was unconscious. Of the angels that took him through the gates of heaven itself. Of the unearthly music that sounded just terrible to a six-year-old. And, most amazing of all . . . Of meeting and talking to Jesus. The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven is the true story of an ordinary boy’s most extraordinary journey. As you see heaven and earth through Alex’s eyes, you’ll come away with new insights on miracles, life beyond this world, and the power of a father’s love.
Wonderful story of healing, love for God and perserverance.

1 Timothy & Titus: Fighting the Good Fight by John Stott

We live in a culture where the beliefs and preferences of the individual are given final authority. Paul's firm commitment to the church as "the pillar and foundation of the truth" stands against the current. His letters to Timothy and Titus call us to reestablish the core beliefs of Christianity and affirm our convictions about the gospel. Paul's priority in these letters is to make sure that the truth of the gospel is faithfully guarded and delivered to the next generation. Through these studies, we will be challenged to carry on the battle, armed with the truth of the gospel. John Stott is one of the world's leading and most loved Bible teachers and preachers. In this guide you can explore Scripture under his guidance, enhancing your own in-depth study with insights gained from his years of immersion in God's Word.
This is the book we just finished studying in Sunday School. It was a very good study on the roles of Christians at home, in the church, & in the world. I just located the Revelation study this author did & referred it to our teacher since that's what we voted to study next.

Book Review: Lord, Teach Me To Study The Bible in 28 Days by Kay Arthur

This interactive workbook leads you into the fascinating world of inductive Bible study where God Himself becomes your teacher. Your Bible reading will never be the same as you learn one concept a day of how to study. This is a very practical, hands-on, learn-by-doing book, perfect for either individuals or small groups. Bible text and space to write insights are included. Readers need only a pen, a few colored pencils . . . and a prayerful heart to complete each study and experience the Bible's life-changing power. New Discussion Questions added in the back.

I really am glad I've learned how to study the bible this way. If I continue to work on my own throughout the summer, I'm going to "Lord, Teach Me to Pray in 28 Days"

Book Review: Dinner with a Perfect Stranger by David Gregory

You are Invited to a Dinner with Jesus of Nazareth

The mysterious envelope arrives on Nick Cominsky’s desk amid a stack of credit card applications and business-related junk mail. Although his seventy-hour workweek has already eaten into his limited family time, Nick can’t pass up the opportunity to see what kind of plot his colleagues have hatched.

The normally confident, cynical Nick soon finds himself thrown off-balance, drawn into an intriguing conversation with a baffling man who appears to be more than comfortable discussing everything from world religions to the existence of heaven and hell. And this man who calls himself Jesus also seems to know a disturbing amount about Nick’s personal life.

"You’re bored, Nick. You were made for more than this. You’re worried about God stealing your fun, but you’ve got it backwards.… There’s no adventure like being joined to the Creator of the universe." He leaned back off the table. "And your first mission would be to let him guide you out of the mess you’re in at work."

As the evening progresses, their conversation touches on life, God, meaning, pain, faith, and doubt–and it seems that having Dinner with a Perfect Stranger may change Nick’s life forever.

This is one of those extraordinary books that my husband is reading too!

Have you ever been pleasantly surprised by relationships you would never have chosen for yourself but with people who ended up having a positive impact on your life? Book Review: Born Twice, Died Twice by Phillip Proctor

Born Twice, Died Twice is a book of hope. I lived through what should have been a fatal motorcycle wreck in 2002. I broke 27 bones, dislocated joints, and was cut from head to toe. A nurse was the first person to arrive at the scene and she found me dead. She brought me back to life twice. This book is a story about how God wrought many miracles in my life before, during, and after the wreck, and how He continues to work in and through my life today.

If you or a loved one, friend, or co-worker are going through any kind of trial or testing in your life, this book is a must read. I promise, it will bring you comfort and hope. May God richly bless your life. — Phil Proctor

I picked this up earlier today at the local library & just put it down...finished. Excellent true story bio!

Book Review: Faithful, Abundant, True

Kay Arthur teaches from basically, the entire book of Hebrews! Hebrews is both an example of God's faithfulness and a challenge to believers to be faithful in difficult times.

Priscilla Shirer teaches from Ephesians on God's abundance. A fundamental basis for every believer is the absolute reality that God can do whatever He chooses to do. God's ability empowers our faithfulness.

Beth Moore teaches on the topic of discernment. In these difficult days it is absolutely essential that we learn to trust the Holy Spirit to enable us to determine what is true and what is false.

I really like this concept of 3 different teachers working on same basic subject.

Book Review: Breaking Free by Beth Moore

Beth Moore leads you through a study of the Scriptures to discover the transforming power of freedom in Jesus Christ. Themes for this study come from Isaiah, a book about the captivity of God's children, the faithfulness of God, and the road to freedom.

This in-depth women's Bible study draws parallels between the captive Israelites of the Old Testament and New Testament believers in Jesus as the Promised Messiah. Beth looks at the Book of Isaiah through the lives of the kings who ruled during the prophet's ministry. These kings exemplify many of the obstacles to freedom with which we must deal. Using Scripture to help identify spiritual strongholds in your life, no matter how big or small, Beth explains that anything that hinders us from the benefits of knowing God is bondage.

God intends for you to know and believe Him, glorify Him, experience His peace, and enjoy His presence. Breaking Free is Beth's life message that she wants to share with you. Taped live at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, this study includes testimonies of how women like you have found freedom and have been delivered from personal captivity.
Another great one, I just love her studies!

Book Review: Simply Relevant Chocolate Boutique

Our church hosted a women's retreat called Sweet Life Cafe. It was a wonderful bonding time for the women. We enjoyed it so much that my ladies bible study leader chose to do a follow-up book for our spring study this year.

Chocolate Boutique is a 6 week study of God's grace with a chocolate twist each week. It's a small study where most of the learning happens during the weekly meeting. Just the thing for most of us who are very busy in the spring with sports, field trips, & end of the year school functions.

Book Review: The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Tough

The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Tough by Neta Jackson
We'd done it! We'd taken a mismatched, diverse group of women and cobbled together a prayer group that really worked for all of us. Now that spring was here, we were celebrating our one-year anniversary—and a wedding, an early parole, and two baptisms in the lake! Everything was feeling pretty great.

But it's when we're in our comfort zone that we're most likely to let our guard down. Without warning, lots of little things seemed to become big problems. With a white supremacy hate group targeting a local university, our very diversity almost became a liability. It took a vicious attack on Nony's husband to make us see that we had to get tough—and fight back together.

Oh, there are still plenty of loose ends flapping in our faces; there always will be! But now those verses about the different parts of the Body needing each other—Paul's letter to the Corinthians, I think—really mean something to the Yada Yada prayer warriors.

Loved this book just as much as the others, but now that I have read 2 back-to-back this one made me cry at the end. Or maybe I'm in a different place than when I first started reading this series.

Book Review: The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Real

The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Real by Neta Jackson
They thought they had a handle on forgiveness, but it seems God has them on a crash-course to an even deeper level!

After everything the Yada Yadas had been through in the past eight months, I told God I could sure use a little "dull and boring" in the new year! Was that too much to ask? But that was before Leslie "Stu" Stewart moved in upstairs. Ms. Perfect herself and me—Jodi Baxter—living in the same two-flat? A recipe for a collision. Then Delores Enriques' son Jose wanted to throw my Amanda a quinceanera—a coming-out party, Mexican style-and they're only fifteen!

Yo-Yo's still making us squirm with her gut-level honesty ... and what's with this guy courting Avis? Our Avis! I guess I should have realized that with eleven Yada Yada sisters as diverse as a bag of Jelly Bellies, life would always be unpredictable.

At least Bandana Woman, who held up our Yada Yada Prayer Group at knifepoint last fall, was safely locked up in prison ... or so I thought. We visited her, like the Bible says; even sent her something for Christmas. But then she ends up back in our face. I mean, how far is forgiveness supposed to go?

All I know is that the longer we Yada Yadas pray together, the more "real" things are getting, not only with each other but with God. "Dull and boring"? Not a chance.
I've been waiting for this book forever! I finally found it on half.com when I was looking for my new sunday school lesson book. I already have #4 & #6 & Mom has #5 & #7.

This book just fits me. I am so much like the narrator in this book. I want to pray, but I'm still learning how. Not to mention the problem of keeping the faith during all the chaos of life around me.
